When the son of Nathaniel Essex, Adam, died as an infant, it led to the beginnings of his genetic experimentation. He made many clones of himself over the years, but one of them caught his attention and later lead to him bringing the infant to New Orleans and left in a hospital. The Antiquary had him kidnapped from the hospital to be added to his collection, the 'Velvet Ministry'. A collection of young, kidnapped children that he often sold, Remy was meant to remain.

As Remy grew up, Jean-Luc LeBeau, after seeing his eyes, used his influence to allow Remy to join a gang belonging to the guild to get him away from the Antiquary (this is because a mysterious man in the past with the same eyes rescued him in London, this turns out to have been Remy having gone back in the past). When Remy was 10, he attempted to steal a pocket watch belonging to Jean-Luc, but instead of being punished, he was adopted.

From then on, Remy trained as a thief, was enrolled in a private Catholic school, and was taught Savate. During this time, Remy's powers manifested, but he tried his best to hide them.

At 15, he proctored his younger cousin, Etienne's test to become a full member of the guild. The two were kidnapped by Pig, with a group of boys being conditioned to join HYDRA. Remy was still hiding his abilities at the time, and was unable to rescue his cousin, resulting in his death.

Later, he was contracted by Mister Sinister (under the name Nathaniel Essex) to break into the Weapon X facility to retrieve his research notes. Witnessing the horrors in the Weapon X facility, and the escape of Logan. Remy destroys Mister Sinister's notes in the hopes that the experiments stop. This, of course, was futile.

At 18, Remy was set up for an arranged marriage with the daughter of the Assassins' Guild, Belladonna Boudreaux. Her brother, Julien was against the marriage and challenged Remy to a duel. His powers accidentally flared up during the fight, and he killed Julien. The use of his powers was considered dishonorable and he was exiled from New Orleans, effectively ending the marriage.

His powers began to spiral out of control until he eventually went to Mister Sinister. In exchange for his aid, Remy was tasked with putting a group together for a mission. He was unaware that the "Marauders" were meant to slaughter the Morlocks. Remy tried to stop the attack, but the Marauders turned on him. He was only able to rescue one Morlock, Marrow, but he was too badly injured to do anything else.

From there, he eventually joined the X-Men, with the help of Ororo, but he tried his best to keep his past a secret from his new friends.

Gambit
Molecular Acceleration: Remy has the power to tap into the potential energy stored in an object and convert it to kinetic energy, this often has explosive results. Originally, this required direct skin contact, now he can charge anything in sight with a simple hand gesture. Contrary to common belief, he can charge organic material.
Dissolution: Remy can cause objects to pull themselves apart instead of exploding violently making them harmlessly melt down to nothing. This also allows him to shatter ice if he's encased in it without it exploding violently.
Disruption: Remy can temporarily scramble a persons sensory awareness knocking them out cold, or temporarily paralyzing them in place.
Enhanced Conditioning: Remy's ability to tap energy also grants him increased speed, strength, reflexes, flexibility, dexterity, balance, and endurance as a side effect.
Accelerated Regeneration: Remy can enhance his own recovery rate by stimulating his own cellular activity.
Static Interference: Remy creates natural static from the energy constantly being generated within his body. This static shields his mind from intrusion by telepaths, and is often considered unpleasant to those who try.
Vibration Emission: Remy can emit a shockwave accompanying a bright flashbang.
Trajectory Manipulation: Remy is capable of guiding charged objects to their target mentally. Along with the ability to charge things at a range, this makes him seem almost telekinetic.
Target Tagging: Remy can 'tag' a person or object by remotely charging them. This tag allows him to track his target.

Hypnotic Charm: Subliminal psionic talent channeled through his voice that allows a subtle influence over any sentient mind. This power allows Remy to compel others to believe what he says and agree with anything he suggests.

Darkvision: As Remy's powers grew, he became more light sensitive and gained the ability to see in the dark. He often needs to wear sunglasses to protect his eyes.

Death
Toxic Transmutation: Remy can convert breathable air into poisonous gas. This can be in the form of a poisonous cloud, or the oxygen directly stored in someone's lungs.
Death Charge: Augmenting his usual charges, Remy can use thrown objects to break down living matter on contact, totally disintegrating a victim.
Corruption: Possibly an augmentation of his Charm ability, Remy is able to corrupt other creatures and subvert them to his will (Enthralling). They gain a similar appearance to his Death appearance.

Expanded
Total Kinetic Control Remy is able to control all aspects of kinetic energy down to the molecular level. This allows him to fire energy blasts, fly, heal wounds, and tear living beings apart from the inside out. At full power, he is also able to travel across dimensions and transform himself into living energy.
This also allows him to absorb and transfer energy between himself, objects or others, allowing himself to heal more quickly or give others temporary boosts of strength and speed.
Superhuman Physical Prowess: Including strength, speed and agility. This power is triggered and lasts as long as Remy maintains focus.
Precognition: Only present when blind. Remy sees visions and gains a sixth-sense.
